How do you get information?  

By using sources like the company’s site or, in case there are no online sources, you can
ask a representative from the company that contacted you to give you some historical
/organizational details about it.

2. Print your resume. You have to print your resume and have it with you at the interview
in order to give it to the interviewing person. Yes, the employer is supposed to have your
resume already, but if you bring it too, it shows you have been careful, organized and that
you are a professional individual.

3. Preferably when you apply for a specific position, you should write a personalized letter
of intent for the respective company.

4. Write down all the information you have about the company at which you are about to
get an interview.

5. Write down the phone number of the person who contacted you. You might need certain
information.

6. Be punctual: Don’t come half an hour early or 10 minutes late. Ideally, you should show
up for your interview 3 to 5 minutes early. For example, if it is scheduled at 15:00 you
should get there at 14:55- 14:57.

7. Dress in a decent manner (office attire is recommended).

8. In order not to be late, leave home earlier than you would normally do. If you get there
too early, just take a short walk. This will give you an opportunity to study the
surroundings of what might be your next work place. In case you will be late, call the
person who contacted you.

9. During the interview, don’t say things like: “I don’t want to work during the weekend”;
“I want to have time for something else besides work”; “I can’t begin working at the date
you mentioned because I have already planned a vacation”. It is also important to be
determined and resolute. No interviewer will consider hiring a candidate if they are
hesitant, picky, timid, etc. You can be shy, you can be nervous; however, no matter how      nervous you are, you can clearly state your professional objective, your expectations, what
you can add to the company etc.
10. When you are asked what your professional objective is, don’t say “I haven’t thought
about it”. Even if you haven’t thought about it, think for a few seconds and then give them
an answer.

After the interview is over you can send an email to the interviewer the next day or a few
hours later thanking them for their time, thus showing once again your interest for the job.

Let’s suppose you get called to an interview at a company you highly esteem and for which you would like to work. After the meeting with the employer / interviewer is over it is recommended to act in the following manner:
1. Before leaving the company’s building you can tell the interviewer what motivates you to work, thus emphasizing the fact that you would like to get the respective job.
2. Once you get home you can e-mail the interviewer in order to thank them for their time and to make them aware again, in a succinct manner (one or two phrases), of your interest for the respective job. You can do that on the very day you attended the interview or next day at the latest.
3. If the interviewer hasn’t called you back within the time frame they said they would, then you can contact them.
4. Perform your own analysis. Write down all the weak and the strong points you consider you showed during the interview.
5. Think about how you would have wanted the interview to have been organized and what could have gone better. Maybe there were certain key questions you could have asked.
6. Actively relax: Take a walk, talk with your family / friends about how the interview went.

You can ask the same from the other people involved or participating in your project. This gives you valuable information on how to keep people on board the project.

People are often looking for fun, for social contacts, to see/learn new things, to be creative, to challenge themselves,… So as a youth worker you need to keep an eye on whether everybody is getting what they want to get out of it. The best way to ensure the succes of the project is to base it on the young people’s interests and preferences of ways of working.

If people are looking for fun and social gatherings, it is important to create space for this. A minimum of preparation work needs to be done together, but there should also be time for leisure activities and hanging around together: e.g. going to the movies together, organising a (fund-raising) party etc. You can plan these regularly to keep the momentum – without forcing people to have fun of course…

If people want to challenge themselves, it is best to give them tasks in the preparation with increasing difficulty, nevertheless with a sort of safety net in case they don’t feel up to it. It is important to have the right person on the right tasks. If some young people are very creative (and want to do creative stuff), they should get the more creative tasks (making a newspaper about the exchange, developing a logo,…) but other people are probably happy to stay out of the spotlight and do the work behind the scenes. “

Nowadays in Europe people who don’t work are trying to find some certain answers regarding why it is, in some situations, so difficult to find a job that suits them. And we are going to approach today the subject of young unemployment and how positive thinking can be a helpful tool in this “mission” of finding not just a job, but the job.

So, despite the complexity and difficulty of fighting youth unemployment or better said, precisely due to this difficulty, it is neccesary to deal with it with positive thinking. This would be the first lesson gained with experience.

This positive thinking starts by changing theme vocabulary and the mental attitude when dealing with unemployment, for example talking about “youg jobseekers” instead of “young unemployed”, focusing on resources and capacities rather than lacks.  So, for a young unemployed, it is recommended to address himself as a young jobseeker.

Positive thinking also implies the need to analyse the situation of being unemployed, not just in negative terms but also understanding the potential positive impact that it might have in – at least – some aspects of life. According to the famous quote of Harry S. Truman we should try to generate opportunities out of the difficult situation of being unemployed.

Often, in interactive situations, people don’t want to talk. Especially when they use a foreign language. There are uncomfortable of being exposed. Some of the thoughts are: “I have this idea, but it will be ok if I present it in front of this people? They are going to laugh about this? My voice tone will be an appropriate one?”

Therefore, it is important to create an atmosphere where people feel secure enough to speak.

A few methodes:

1. Set a good example and don’t worry if you make mistaked yourself. This way, you set the tone and people feel more confortable about not speaking the language perfectly either. Tell participants that language is only a tool and that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Try and prevent people laughing at others because of language mistakes. Be patient with people who need more time to find their words.

2. Work a lot in smaller groups. It is easier to dare to make mistakes in front of a few people than a big group. The more people get to know each other (use lots of group dynamic exercises), the more they will try to communicate with each other.

3. Give the young people some (backup) tools that they can use during the international activity or project: A little dictionary with basic words and phrases. You could even develop this together with the young people (asking them what expressions they would be likely to need). Or you can (continue to) build this dictionary the exchange.

Of course that are more methods that you can use in order to achieve your goal. Use this articol as an example and find more other methods.

Regarding national or international activities or projects, you can choose methods which involve all senses (smelling, touching, listening, seeing) and not only talking.

Another methodes:

1. Give priority to interactive and creative methods e.g. collage, mime, games, music and so on.

2. Do a workshop on body language and encourage participants to use non-verbal communication.

3. Non-verbal communication takes more time, so allow for this during your programme.

There are some very practical methodes that can be very useful. You will find below a few examples.

1. Show the young people examples of successful previous projects (e.g. pictures, videos, testimonies). Focus on the parts of the project that will be of interest to them. At the same time, you can also show them how they can benefit from those youth projects. Having other young people talking about their experiences sounds more convincing than a youth worker.

2. Build up step by step. Maybe a young person is not so hot on going abroad and leaving friends and family behind. You can whet their appetite step by stept. Go to another nearby city first and do an exchange with like-minded youths (in their own language) before taking the international plunge.

3. Put the youngsters in contact with young people, activities or products from the other countries to arouse some interest. Show the nice side of the partner country you had in mind for your project. Invite them to an intercultural evening and involve them in the preparation as far as possible.

4. Adapt your language to the target group. High flying educational aims might not be interesting, but ‘hanging out’ or ‘jamming’ with other ‘mates’ sounds more appealing. If words don’t get the message across, maybe images or movies will do.

Of course that these are just some examples. There are even more methodes that are useful. Inform yourself and create a strategic plan and you will find out more.
